3 men charged with fraud
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Three men were arrested and charged on Wednesday by detectives from the Fraud Squad for several fraud related offences.
Charged are: 26-year-old Michael Buchanan of Collies Road, Kingston 11, 27-year-old Kavian Brown of a Kingston 20 address and 44-year-old Shawn Berry, a cook shop manager of William Place, Queens Borough, Kingston 19.
Reports are that on Monday, Buchanan went to a financial institution in the Kingston 5 area and applied for an unsecured loan amounting to J$80,000.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, Brown and Berry went to the same company respectively and both applied for an undetermined sum of money. In support of their applications, they submitted documents that claimed they were employed to a local trucking company. A verification exercise was conducted and it was subsequently discovered that the trucking company was nonexistent.
A report was made at the Fraud Squad and an investigation was launched. The accused were later apprehended as they attempted to collect the funds.
On Thursday Buchanan, Brown and Berry were interviewed and charged for conspiracy to defraud, forgery, uttering forged document and attempting to obtain money by means of forged document.
They were offered bail in the sum of J$50,000 and are scheduled to appear before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, September 1.
