COTOPAXI PROVINCE, Ecuador — Indigenous people confront the riot police as they block a road in El Chasqui, Cotopaxi Province, Ecuador, yesterday, during a strike organised by Opposition indigenous groups and unions. Demonstrators took to the streets around Ecuador to protest President Rafael Correa’s moves to seek a fourth term, but the leftist leader declared that plans for a paralysing general strike had failed. Indigenous protesters, who have been particularly vocal critics of Correa, blocked roads in six of Ecuador’s 24 provinces, including the Pan-American Highway to Peru, officials said. (PHOTO: AFP)
