Morgan quietly optimistic of stealing a discus medal
BEIJING, China — Despite coming to the World Championships with the second longest throw in the discus event, Jamaica’s Jason Morgan is not considered one of the medal favourites based on his more recent performances.
But the massive 300 pounder who up to August 1 was the world leader with 68.19m, believes he is back to his best, thanks to the medical staff after a minor setback.
“I came across some difficulties so I am now overcoming those challenges. I have a good medical team here and my body is feeling where it needs to be to get back to that 68m throw,” said Morgan, during a break from training.
Only Poland’s Poitr Malachowski with 68.29m has thrown farther than Morgan this season and the Jamaican is quietly optimistic of stealing a medal despite his poor form leading up to the championships.
“I want to leave it open for anything possible. Right now I am getting back into good shape and I am having more throws in practice,” said Morgan.
He continued: “I wasn’t throwing for a while, so right now I am feeling good with the medical team and the work that they have done on me every day, so my confidence is back up again.”
The selection of Morgan, Fedrick Dacres and Chad Wright at the World Championships is a historic one for Jamaica as never before three discus throwers have represented Jamaica at one major meet.
“It does a lot for team confidence. Just think about it and it’s an elated feeling because I remember times in the past it was just me alone or just me and Dorian (Scott). So I am glad that barrier broke down and now other throwers can come along and do good for Jamaica.”
Morgan won’t be in action until next Thursday, but for now he will just continue to train hard, stay focused and relaxed by listening his favourite artiste Vybes Kartel.
“Listen music, deep meditation and get my mind and body where it needs to be to perform well at this championships,” he concluded.
