KINGSTON, Jamaica – Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller has expressed sadness at the passing of Colonel Frank Lumsden of the Charles Town Maroons in Portland, noting that the Maroon leader has left an important legacy of public activism and an impressive track record of service to his people.

In a statement on Friday, the prime minister noted that the maroon culture is an integral part of the Jamaican heritage and that Colonel Lumsden led the Charles Town Maroon Council with conviction, dedication and distinction.

The prime minister said the late Maroon leader will be remembered for his tireless efforts to preserve the traditional beliefs, principles, culture, and skills of his people.

“He led many reforms in the administration of the Maroon Council, and the Asafu Yard meeting place as well as the annual International Maroon conference at Charles Town,” Simpson Miller pointed out. “These are important monuments to his relentless work and immense contribution to Maroon culture.”

 Simpson Miller also highlighted Colonel Lumsden’s exemplary work to advance the economic and social wellbeing of Jamaica’s Maroons and the people of Portland.

 “An area of significant achievement for which Colonel Lumsden will be remembered is his collaborative reach across various sectors of the society as he interfaced with the private sector, the Government, the academic community and international organisations, among other groups, to build a better understanding and appreciation of Maroon history, culture and place in the society.

 “I extend sincere condolences to his family, the Charles Town Maroon Council and to the entire Charles Town Community,” the prime minister said.
