Transport Authority taxi chases causing major accidents – JATOO
KINGSTON, Jamaica –The Jamaica Association of Transport Owners and Operators (JATOO), is calling on the Transport Authority to immediately desist from chasing Public Passenger Vehicles as this is causing major accident and endangering the lives of the passengers and operators.
In a press release Wednesday afternoon, JATOO said: “While we encourage operators to obey the rules and regulations of the Transport Authority and the police, the chasing and “slamming” of PPV licensed vehicles in order to apprehend that vehicle is not only extremely dangerous but is illegal.”
“Over the past week several taxi operators have been chased and hit by Transport Authority vehicles. The most recent incident took place on Tuesday in the National Stadium vicinity,” the release said.
JATOO added in the release that the present situation of the towing and impounding of taxis for periods beyond the time stated by law is of great concern to the sector and operators are now restive and are calling for the intervention of the minister of transport in a bid to avert any possible action by the operators which could be explosive if not addressed.
“In our view the chasing and “slamming” of taxis by the Transport Authority is a major financial loss not just to our members but also to the Transport Authority as their vehicles are also damaged,” JATOO said.
