Right Hair, Right Now!

On a constant search for hair products that actually work, your Under the Dryer hair squad discovered a line of ‘scent’sational hair products for natural and relaxed hair. You heard right, Kumea’s Hair Perspective founder and owner Yolande Kumea Gooden-Rhoden took seven years to formulate a product she’s quite proud of. Created from a need for hair products that actually work, Gooden-Rhoden formulates and manufactures organic products for general hair types. “What’s most rewarding for me is to see the product do exactly what I say it will do,” Gooden-Rhoden says.

Kumea’s Hair Persepctive thrives on incorporating local ingredients such as coconut hair oil, castor oil, hemp seed oil, and strawberries, which add to the soothing aromas. The products are available at a range of pharmacies and beauty supplies stores islandwide.

Kumea’s natural hair titbit: The first step is to find a product that suits your hair type. This includes trial and error processes that usually last up to six months. Your regimen must include a moisturiser, a curl definer and a sealant. Apply the products, and cover hair with a silk bonnet before bed to maintain curls. Once removed, apply a little moisturiser to freshen the look, and you’re set.

Innswood High School teacher Ana-Alicia Beckford has long curly hair but, when humidity kicks in, her hair shrinks, then gets dry and coarse. Gooden-Rhoden applied her Thick Strands Twist & Define Curl Pudding along with the Strawberry Kurls Leave-in Moisturizer and Curl Definer to add moisture from the roots to tips, and amp up the curl factor.

Beckford’s take: Well, my hair already looks longer; it’s not dry like it was before. The texture is so silky, I can feel the moisture.

Scotiabank customer service agent Ronique Innis’s hair was damaged from a rinse she received a few months ago. “The best way to ensure healthy growth is to moisturise regularly and use a protein treatment,” Gooden-Rhoden states. To get back those soft luscious curls, Gooden-Rhoden applied Kumea’s Strawberry Curls Leave-in Moisturizer and Curl Definer, then sealed in the moisture with Kumea’s Extra Virgin Coconut Hair Oil.

Innis’ take: Consider me blown away.

Home International Limited sales agent Tiphani Downer had a bad dye job which left her hair — especially towards the ends — dry and brittle. The first step to treating this was to mould curls with Kumea’s Thick Strands Twist & Define Curl Pudding, then lock in moisture and twist in the Strawberry Kurls Curl Definer.

Downer’s take: I love how defined the curls are after the twist out was complete. My hair feels so soft and curly; I didn’t think it could go back to this state.

Kumea’s relaxed hair titbit: Use oil-based products as opposed to their water-based alternatives, because water works against the perm; it all boils down to chemistry. Kumea’s Moisturizing Hair Butter and Extra Virgin Coconut Hair Oil will give your relaxed hair the desired sheen and moisture. Finish with Kumea’s Moisturizing Hair Butter to smooth edges and kinks.

Jhannelle Francis, an upper sixth-form student at St Andrew High School for Girls, has a bit of a tousle with her hair from time to time. Even after a visit to her regular hairstylist, Francis couldn’t seem to maintain the sheen and moisture she loves. Fixing this was simple, however; Palmer applied the extra virgin coconut hair oil to add sheen, and the moisturising hair butter to tame her edges.

Francis’s take: My hair is now softer and silkier than before; it’s also not as flaky. And the 20-second scalp massage was heaven!

Finding the “right” product was the hair dilemma for University of the West Indies first year International Relations student and part-time model Samantha Delfosse. Kumea’s Moisturizing Hair Butter and Extra Virgin Coconut Hair Oil whipped her hair right back into shape. In addition, Palmer opted for a light curly hairstyle.

Delfosse’s take: My hair smells great. I’m not seeing any frizz; I love it. I am gonna purchase the products right now.

Sueal Hardeen, University of Technology second-year dentistry student, needed help finding a moisturising hair treatment that didn’t leave her with split ends or coarse tips — the solution — Palmer applied Kumea’s Moisturizing Hair Butter, then flat-ironed the hair.

Hardeen’s take: I feel refreshed, kinda like I just stepped out of the salon. The process was fast and minimal, and now my hair is shiny and soft without feeling heavy.

Tiffany Campbell, a second-year law student at the Norman Manley Law School with dry and brittle hair. Palmer applied a few squirts of the Extra Virgin Coconut Hair Oil and the Moisturizing Hair Butter, then styled Campbell’s hair in an updo.

Campbell’s take: I love this style! My hair is definitely softer and more manageable.
