Weekly Round-Up: Two UWI students dead…Suicides rock JCF…Ja dominate Beijing
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona, has been plunged into mourning again following the deaths of two students Wednesday night in St Ann.
Twenty-three-year-old O’Shane Reid and his 22-year-old girlfriend Shanise Simmonds were killed when the vehicle they were travelling in collided with a Toyota coaster bus on the Drax Hall main road in the parish.
Meanwhile, the Police High Command on Thursday said it was growing increasingly concerned about the frequency at which they were being called to investigate cases of suspected suicide involving members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF).
The concerns were raised after the JCF was again rocked by news of the death of two more policemen — one being investigated as a suspected suicide and the other being probed as death by natural causes.
At the same time, Jamaicans were given something to smile about as Team Jamaica continue to dominate at the 15th IAAF World Championship currently under way in Beijing, China. So far, Jamaica is in third place on the medal table with nine medals — four gold, two silver and three bronze. Kenya heads the table 11 medals — six gold, three silver and two bronze — ahead of the United States’ 14 — four gold, four silver and six bronze.
