$850,000 bail for MOCA cops caught in alleged extortion
TWO policemen who reportedly collected $100,000 from a businessman after threatening to arrest him for lottery scamming were on Thursday offered bail in the sum of $850,000 when they appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court.
Ironically, the two, Corporal Omar Lobban and Constable Remore Thomas, were assigned to the Major Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption Agency (MOCA) at the time of the alleged incident.
According to allegations heard in court, they visited the businessman’s courier service operations, told him that he was involved in lottery scamming and threatened to arrest him for it.
The complainant reportedly requested audience with his attorney, but the cops allegedly told him it was not necessary, as he knew what to do. It is further alleged that the businessman asked the policemen if they wanted money and told them he could get it to them at a later date, to which they agreed.
The officers are said to have visited the complainant on three different occasions but did not receive any funds on the first two attempts. On the third occasion, they were held in a sting operation carried out by MOCA.
Thomas reportedly collected the money while Lobban waited outside in a car.
Thursday, when the matter was mentioned lawyers for both accused maintained that their clients were innocent.
Attorney Pierre Rogers is representing Lobban while Ann-Marie Feurtado Richards is representing Thomas.
The accused are scheduled to return to court on October 12.
