Sub-10 king Powell wins in Zagreb
KINGSTON, Jamaica — World Championships relay gold medallist and former world record holder Asafa Powell finished ahead of the field in the men’s 100-metre event at the IAAF World Challenge meeting in Zagreb, Croatia on Tuesday.
Powell clocked a time of 9.96 seconds with an aiding wind of 0.3 seconds. He won ahead of American Mike Rodgers (10.10) and Turkey’s Ramil Gulyiev, who finished in a time of 10.18 for third. The victory marks Powell’s 97th legal sub-10 clocking.
St Kitts & Nevis’ Kim Collins was fifth with 10.31 seconds.
In the men’s 110m hurdles, Jamaica’s Andrew Riley finished third in a time of 13.52 seconds behind Russia’s Sergei Shubenkov (13.11) and Pascal Maritinot (13.50) of France.
Meanwhile, Riley’s compatriot Simone Facey had to settle for third in the women’s 100m after clocking a time of 11.25 seconds. The race was won by American Candice McGrone (11.10); Marie-Josee Ta Lou of Ivory Coast was third in a time of 11.17 seconds.
Olympic Games medal-winning sprinter Sherone Simpson finished down the field in fifth position in a time of 11.37 seconds.
World Championships relay gold medallist Novelene Williams-Mills ran a time of 51.81 seconds to finish third in the women’s 400m event behind American winner Natasha Hastings (51.20). France’s Floria Guei was second in a time of 51.63 seconds.
