MINISTER of Industry, Investment and Commerce Anthony Hylton is urging consumers who import motor vehicles into the island, to first ascertain if the manufacturers have dealers or representatives in Jamaica.

The minister’s advice comes as a result of several persons buying vehicles from overseas and cannot obtain proper servicing for them, because makers of the vehicles do not have local dealers.

Hylton, who participated in a motor vehicle policy forum in Kingston on Tuesday, heard the concerns raised by affected persons, and advised them that they must get all the necessary information before investing their money in the vehicles.

“There are models of cars that are sold in this country and elsewhere that are not represented by a legal dealer locally, and when issues arise, it is more difficult to deal with those issues, because they do not have a dedicated person to consult,” the minister told the forum, held at the Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica Auditorium.

He added that while consumers are exercising their choice of what vehicle to purchase, they must not wait until they encounter challenges with them before seeking critical information. “Enquire about how you will get certain matters addressed,” the minister advised.

The forum was held to sensitise consumers about the Motor Vehicle Policy, and to explore some of the critical issues affecting consumers and players in the industry.

Hylton said given the large representation from dealers and consumers, he is encouraged to have other such events, as the Government moves to legislate the Motor Vehicle Policy.

Presentations were also made by the Consumer Affairs Commission, the Jamaica Used Car Dealers Association, the Trade Board and the Fair Trading Commission. Members of the audience also gave their opinions.
