‘I am proud to work here’
EMPLOYEES of Digicel Jamaica, whose children were awarded $1 million in scholarships this year, are singing the telecoms company’s praises.
“It’s great to know that Digicel doesn’t only care about the bottom line, but also about their employees and by extension our children. This scholarship is such a big help to me and is very rewarding for my daughter, Hailey, who is now motivated to work even harder at her studies,” said Tasharna Thompson-Henny, strategic sales team leader.
“To know that Digicel makes it a priority to help their employees, especially in this economic climate that is negatively impacting both businesses and workers makes me proud to work here,” she continued.
Business services executive Kerry-Ann Young, whose daughter just started Wolmer’s Girls’ School, had similar views.
“Gabrielle really deserves this scholarship. She worked really hard while at Jessie Ripoll and came out with a 95.6 per cent in the GSAT. As a parent, I am really appreciative because the scholarship covered full tuition and books for the year, which is a big help especially when I have three other kids going off to school as well,” Young said.
The Digicel Scholarship Programme is now in its second year and is part of a wider effort to assist both its employees and customers with back-to-school expenses. Included in that is the more than 25 back-to-school fairs which it helped finance this year, and a number of tertiary scholarships which will be awarded later this month.
“Education is an important part of building Jamaica and helping our young people achieve their goals in life. With the Digicel Scholarship programme, we hope that we can contribute to the growth and development of the children whose parents are giving so much to the company. These children have a proven track record of excellence and we want to help them continue on that path to success,” said Andrea Hardware, director of Human Resources.
The scholarship awardees had to have above-average grades, a collection of scholastic awards, and had to be active in extracurricular activities.
