St George’s on the hunt again
THE Inter-secondary School Sports Association (ISSA)/ FLOW Manning Cup competition is now in full flow and will continue today with nine games.
All matches are scheduled to begin at 3:30 pm.
St George’s College will be among those in action as they seek to build on their impressive 9-0 opener against Kingston Technical on Monday. However, the many-time champions are expected to face a stiffer challenge when they visit Denham Town at Edward Seaga Sports Complex.
Both teams are on three points with St George’s leading the way with a superior goal difference, while Denham Town are in third position. The North Street-based team was all the rave when playing in front of a large home support as they put in a ruthless performance against a listless Kingston Technical unit.
And with their seasoned players Alex Marshall and Gregory Messam Jr now enjoying the early goalscoring form, chances are the Neville Bell-conditioned unit could once again come away with all three points.
Captain Shevon Stewart, Stephan Gilzene, along with Jerome Coombs, who made the move from Kingston College, and Hakim Williams, coming in from Calabar, will also be expected to figure for the ‘Light Blues’.
But the improving Denham Town team would have gathered momentum from their opener and will have other ideas with the home court advantage.
In other Group C games, second-placed Innswood High (three points) should extend their win streak when they visit the hapless Kingston Technical, while fifth-placed Ardenne will be seeking their first point and rebound from their 0-2 loss to Innswood when they welcome fourth-placed Eltham, also without a point.
Over in Group B, leaders Dunoon Technical will seek to extend their lead on the pack when they do battle against second-placed Greater Portmore on one point. Third-placed Papine and fifth-place Hydel, who are also on one point each, will be in an intriguing battle, while fourth-placed Cumberland (one point) will play away to Haile Selassie who are without a point.
Meanwhile, leaders Excelsior and Vauxhall will be in an early top-of-the-table clash in Group F. Both teams opened with comfortable victories and should press each other to the final whistle in what should be an evenly contested encounter.
Third-place Jonathan Grant (three points) could move up the ranks when they visit Ascot, who are currently at the bottom of the six-team standing without a point, while fourth-placed Norman Manley could gain their first point when they welcome fifth-place Spanish Town who are also without a point.
