10 slangs only Chi Ching Ching could have made popular
Now, if you listen to Jamaican radio, or even the ads on the radio, you cannot go a day without hearing Chi Ching Ching, or one of his slangs. What may have started off as just gimmicks for Ching, has become a part of his identity in dancehall as a dancer and a deejay.
Here are some of the top slangs that Chi Ching Ching has come up with over the years that we have accepted as part of our lingo, without even questioning their relevance to our everyday situations and discussions.Patois Pun (don’t write that on any test papers now). But this was done in the time when snapbacks were all the rage and everybody wanted one, so they could be “hat”.
1. “Warning!!” – (insert the motor-like throaty sound that only Chi Ching Ching himself can do). This is one of the only slangs ever used by Ching that was not accompanied by a dance move. This one is usually said off-stage or at the beginning of a track to let the audience know that Ching is around.
2. “We make di popcorn pop.” – If you don’t remember this, you are not yet a teen. This slang, which debuted in a collab with Bling Dawg, had us all rocking and wondering “Who is this Chi Ching Ching person?” Plot twist: Chi Ching Ching is now signed to Popcaan’s Unruly label.
3. “Watchi Wiya” – So, there is a song for this one, as well as a dance, but honestly bruh, why is it so important that we watch the wire? Does JPS know about this high-voltage wire that we are so worried about? Is it even legal?
4. “Coob dem up” – Coob up who? Coob up what? Who is Coob? Sure enough Ching made a song and dance for this one too, giving us instructions on how to “coob”, but we still would like to know WHYYYY are we doing this?
5. “Hot A Nuh Snapback” – Lol. Tell me if I’m wrong, but my interpretation of this is Ching explaining to the yout’ that a Snapback “hat” can’t make you “hot”. It’s a literary device called
6. “Freshhhhhhh wid seven H” – So this slang takes a little math. In order to get it right, you take whatever adjective you want to describe yourself (or someone else) with, think of the last letter of the word, then multiply that letter by seven. For e.g. “Mi hot wid seven T,” “She ugly with seven Y,” or “Dem weird wid seven D.”
7. “One knock” – Just know that if Chi Ching Ching ever comes to your house to see you or pick you up, he will knock once and leave… Like one single knock on the door…. Like not even “Knock Knock,” just “Knock.” Why? Because according to Ching “Two knock a knock off!”
8. “Low me nuh!” – Now we can definitely see this one translating into our daily lives. One of the most useful of all of Chi Ching Ching’s slangs. (Just so nobody is reading this wrong, pronounce “low” like “cow”, not like “tow”).
9. “Way up!” – This is a level up from Ching’s “Up! I’m going up!” some years ago. But remember, it is not enough to be “way up”, you must ensure that you “Stay up”
10. “Chain Saw stuck Ina Bone” – Honestly, I have no theory nor explanation for this one. Late night horror movie perhaps?
