BB Coke blank STETHS 1-0

MANDEVILLE, Manchester — Mile Gully (seven points) moved up to second place behind Manchester High (12 points) in Zone F of the ISSA/Flow daCosta Cup football competition yesterday after a 0-0 draw with Cross Keys (seven points) who are now third. While Winston Jones High and Belair both got their first points after playing out a 1-1 draw.

Manchester High increased their lead after blanking deCarteret College (six points) 2-0. Three other schools that went into the day with three wins had their streaks snapped; Vere Technical lost 0- 1 to Kemps Hill in Zone N; Dinthill Technical were held 0-0 by Charlemont in Zone K, while Islington High were held 1-1 by Brimmervale in Zone J.

Things have taken a turn for the worse for four-time champions St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) who were beaten 0-1 by BB Coke after Kazi Fisher’s goal gave them their first-ever win over the former champions. The win moved BB Coke into second place as STETHS slipped to fourth, while Lacovia High extended their lead after beating MaggottyHigh 2-1.

Lacovia lead with 10 points, followed by BB Coke on seven, with STETHS and Maggotty on five each, and Munro College on four points after winning their first game of the season, edging Newell 2-1 at Alpart. Petersfield High surged to the top of Zone D after edging Godfrey Stewart High 1-0 in Sav-la-Mar in a game between two teams that had won the first two games.

Meanwhile, former champions Rusea’s High and Port Antonio High will this afternoon hope to make it three wins from three games as the competition continues with 16 games across eight of the 12 zones.

Rusea’s High are coming off backto- back 1-0 wins over Green Island and Frome Technical and will travel to face Cambridge High in south St James in Zone B. Despite their potent line-up, Rusea’s have only managed two goals so far and are hoping to open the flood gates today against Cambridge who have conceded four in two games played.

Cambridge High have never beaten the 10-time champions and will hope home advantage might be able to give them some assistance. In another Zone B game Frome Technical will seek to rebound from Saturday’s hiccup against Rusea’s when they take on Green Island, who they have beaten twice last year and seven of the last eight times they have met.

Despite their loss at home to Rusea’s, Green Island have looked impressive and could surprise Frome. Port Antonio High and Happy Grove meet for the sole leadership in Zone L as both teams are locked on six points. Port Antonio have played two games however, one less than Happy Grove.

Port Antonio lead on goal difference, scoring six goals without conceding, compared to Happy Grove’s three for and two against. In Zone G, Knox High and Spalding will meet in a top-of-thetable clash, both on five points, in a closely contested zone that sees the next three teams on four points each.

Knox have not beaten Spalding in the last five years, however, but will draw confidence from last season when they drew both games despite both schools finishing at the foot of the table.

Zone A is also looking set to be another battle royal among three teams, two will meet today when Green Pond welcome St James High, whom they have beaten three of the last four times, while drawing the other. St James, who last beat Green Pond three years ago in 2012, are coming off a promising display against Cornwall College in a 1-1 draw, and could take over the lead with a win.

Lennon High, who snapped defending champions Clarendon College’s two-game winning start with a draw on Saturday, could draw level with Clarendon at the top of Zone H with a win over Kellits, losers of all three games played so far.

In Zone C Spot Valley High and Muschett High are both seeking to make it two wins in a row after opening up their season with wins on Saturday.

Spot Valley, who came from two goals down to beat Herbert Morrison, will be at home to William Knibb, while Muschett will play away to Herbert Morrison.
