Petrojam, Peak Bottling are Business House football champs
Petrojam and first-time entrant Peak Bottling Company were crowned champions of the
2015 Western Sports-sponsored Business House football competition at Barbican playing field last Saturday, following victories over Sagicor Group and GraceKennedy, respectively.
Petrojam’s dominance of Business House football continued with their 3-2 penalty shoot-out win over GraceKennedy after both teams had battled to a 1-1 full and extra time result. They copped their fifth Division One title in six years and the seventh overall, after winning the Division Two title in 2009.
In an evenly contested match, which was cagey at first, both teams played as if they did not want to lose, resulting in the first half lacking in ambition, as most of the game was played in the middle of the field with no serious attempts at scoring. The second half was a different affair as both teams stepped up their game and goalkeepers Damian Hyatt and Edsel Scott had to make saves to keep their teams in the match.
GraceKennedy’s semi-final hero Karet Hosang turned villain as he picked up his second yellow card of the match in the 65th minute for a dangerous tackle and was red-carded. This swung the game in Petrojam’s favour and they made use of the one man advantage and scored in the 74th minute when Jarron Richards kicked a David Stultz cross past a diving Edsel Scott in goal.
GraceKennedy’s never-say-die attitude was evident and they got the equaliser in the 83th minute, as Stultz mistimed kick resulted in the ball going to Akiem Coley who headed past the advancing goalkeeper Damion Hyatt in goal to
send the jubilant Grace supporters in a frenzy.
David Stultz, Rafiek Thomas and Nichealos Martin all scored for Petrojam, while Andrew Christie and Jarron Richards had their kicks saved by Edsel Scott, while only Andrew Lewin and Clayton Tucker managed to score for GraceKennedy, with Diego Haughton, Nickoy Christian and Dwayne Atkinson all missing their spot kicks.
The Division Two final saw two first-time entrants to Business House football meeting for the second time this season. Undefeated Peak Bottling were the favourites and they came out victorious 2-0. They scored the first goal in the 41st minute after Troyland Williams’s corner kick eluded the Sagicor defenders and Maurice Ricketts kicked past a hapless Kirk Shaw in goal. The half ended 1-0. Sagicor came out searching for the equaliser in the second half but faulty shooting by Ajani Spencer and Rohan Findlay and also good goalkeeping by Mervin Grant prevented this. In chasing the game they were punished in the 77th minute when central defender Paul Heslop lost the ball and Andrew Morrison dribbled to beat Sean Blackwood and kick past goalkeeper Kirk Shaw. Both Peak Bottling Company and Sagicor Group are now promoted to Division One for the 2016 season.
Petrojam and Peak Bottling Company will meet today at Barbican playing field at 6:00 pm in the Raymond Quallo Memorial Challenge match to decide who will meet the St Ann’s Business House champions Couples Tower Isle in the Champion of Champions decider.
