Stewart among athletes released by Racers
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Olympic 100-metre silver medallist Kerron Stewart is among approximately 12 athletes that will be leaving the Racers Track club for one reason or another.
Glen Mills, Racers head honcho, told OBSERVER ONLINE that Stewart, Schillonie Calvert and Ristananna Tracey are just three big names who were released.
“It is nothing new. We have been carrying out the exercise for the last three years,” said Mills.
Racers is one of the top clubs in the world and is the home of the greatest athlete of all time Usain Bolt and his heir apparent Yohan Blake.
Stewart, 31, has personal best times of 10.75 in the 100m set in 2009 and 21.99 for the 200m in 2008. However, she has not been able to get back into that kind of shape.
She severed ties with long time coach Henry Rolle and joined Racers in 2013 in an effort to regain her form, but that move has not bore fruits either.
Calvert, 27, is one of Jamaica’s most promising schoolgirl sprinters and is a part of the 4x100m relay set up. She has personal bests of 11.05 and 22.55 seconds for the 100m and 200m respectively.
Tracey, 23, a schoolgirl star at Edwin Allen High is super talented and can run from 200m to 800m but has been concentrating on the 400m hurdles with a best of 54.52 seconds.
Jermaine Gayle, Demar Murray, Assain Hall, and Shavon Barnes are some of the other athletes that will be moving on.
