Jamaican Twitter responds to PM David Cameron
David Cameron’s visit of Jamaican started yesterday with the announcement of a Memorandum of Understanding signed with Jamaica for the building of a prison. That has been one of the most talked about issues on Twitter this morning, as well as issues such as reparations and the content of David Cameron’s statement.
On the matter of the prison, the reaction has been mostly unfavourable.
Some bemoaned the cost:
Others, thought it sent the wrong message:
Others were more than unsatisfied with Cameron’s skirting of reparations and tone of ‘focusing on the future’ and ‘moving on from the past’.
In general, Jamaican Twitter seems unhappy with the prospect of accepting a prison built, mainly for deportees so that UK taxpayers don’t foot the bill. Andrew Holness got good reactions from his response to Cameron that prisons aren’t the best way to help the growth agenda, as well as his urging that the past of slavery cannot be forgotten. There was even talk of organising a protest. We shall see if talk like that, which is common on Twitter, comes to any fruition.
