Charlie Smith look to extend perfect record

LAST year’s beaten finalist’s Charlie Smith will put their unbeaten record on the line when they face Holy Trinity in Group D return-leg action of the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/Flow Manning Cup at Anthony Spaulding Complex in one of eight games on today.

All games are scheduled to begin at 3:30 pm.

The young Charlie Smith outfit is now the only team yet to drop points in the competition with a perfect win record, and have seemingly secured a berth in the lucrative Super Cup and Walker Cup knockout tournaments.

The Jerome Waite-coached boys are currently in pole position on 15 points with 21 goals to their credit and two against the defensive line in five games. Their rich vein of goal scoring form at home is once again expected to continue following a spanking 8-1 win over Penwood recently.

Charlie Smith will enter the contest with their ‘tails’ up and the odds in their favour to extend the unbeaten streak, having already defeated today’s opponents 2-1 in their first-leg meeting.

But Holy Trinity are by no means a walkover and they will be seeking to assert their status by turning the tables.

The Devon Anderson-conditioned boys are currently occupying second position on eight points with a superior goal difference over St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS) and St Mary’s College, and could tighten their grip in the hunt for a second-round berth with victory.

With third-placed STATHS being idle, and should Holy Trinity falter, fourth-placed St Mary’s College are poised to make a telling move pending the outcome of their fixture against cellar dweller Penwood, who are still searching for their first point.

St Mary’s College currently hold a minus one goal difference, and with Penwood suffering from 23 goals against, the Everald Campbell-coached St Mary’s College could improve their goals for tally.

Champions Jamaica College have recovered top form in Group A following a stuttering start to the defence of their title. The Miguel Coley-coached team should secure a fifth-consecutive victory when they visit lowly Clan Carthy at Alpha.

The Old Hope Road-based boys are currently atop the five-team table on 13 points, while Clan Carthy are rooted at the bottom on four points.

Calabar have now slipped to third in the standings on eight points, after suffering consecutive defeats in 1-4 and 0-1 scorelines against Jamaica College and second-placed St Catherine High (nine points), respectively.

And the Bradley Stewart-coached team will once again face another difficult task against fourth-placed Tivoli Gardens, who are on six points, at the Edward Seaga Sports Complex.

However, victory for the Red Hills Road-based boys will keep them in contention for a second-round berth, while another loss could signal the end of the road on their campaign.

In Group B, leaders St Jago (13 points) will seek to extend their lead on the pack when they visit a struggling Kingston High team that is rooted at the bottom of the standings without a point.

The Monk Street-based unit held its own against Wolmer’s Boys in a goal-less encounter after going down 0-1 to the same opponents at the start of their campaign, and should secure win number five with minimum fuss.

Wolmer’s Boys are unbeaten in five outings, but currently occupy second position with an inferior goal difference and will encounter another stiff challenge to keep their unbeaten record intact.

The Vassel Reynolds-conditioned unit who dropped points for the first time will seek to make amends despite playing away to former champions Bridgeport High (third place on nine points) at Ferdie Neita Park.

Meanwhile, Group G leaders Kingston College (16 points), who also dropped points for the first time this season in a 1-1 scoreline against Jose Marti in their last outing, should rebound against minnows Campion College.

The North Street-based school previously achieved five-consecutive wins, scoring 14 times, including a 6-0 pounding of today’s opponents, and are favoured to repeat or surpass the feat.

Second-placed Camperdown (12 points) will enter an intriguing clash away to third-placed Jose Marti (seven points) as they seek to stay in close quarters to the leaders.
