Taxi operators protest, refute police report
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Scores of taxi operators today protested in front of the offices of the Transport Authority on Maxfield Avenue in Kingston.
Operators say they are angry because of an operation carried out by officials from the Transport Authority and the police earlier today along Constant Spring Road in St Andrew.
“Police continue to target private transport operators unfairly and this has to stop,” one taxi operator said, adding that an operator was held, without warning, in the town.
However, police have reported otherwise. Reports are that the police and Transport Authority officials ordered a taxi operator to stop, but he ignored.
That operator was then apprehended after he led authorities on a high-speed chase through the streets of Half-Way-Tree.
Two people were mowed down during the incident. It is not clear which motor vehicle injured the men.
