Education Ministry investigates security system at Brown’s Town High School
ST ANN, Jamaica — The Ministry of Education has launched an investigation into the security system at the Brown’s Town High School following the killing of a Grade 11 student allegedly by his schoolmate on Thursday.
Sergeant Coleridge Minto, director of Safety and Security in Schools, said the ministry is very concerned about the killing of Jamala Barnaby. He was stabbed to death.
Pointing to the safety and security guideline issued by the ministry to schools, Minto said checks will be made to see whether or not any security and safety guidelines were breached.
He also said checks will also be made to ascertain how students managed to carry weapon onto the school compound in spite of security measures which should be in place. The school is equipped with hand-held metal detectors to help to combat that problem.
Expressing that there is a duty to care for the students, Minto added that if there are any gaps found in the security system at the school, those will be addressed.
