St George’s welcome Denham Town in lone game
Favourites St George’s College (STGC) and Denham Town High will square off in the lone game of the ISSA/Flow Manning Cup at Winchester Park today.
The Group C encounter is scheduled to begin at 3:30 pm.
St George’s College are currently atop the six-team standings on 19 points, three more than Denham Town and Innswood High as the battle for a second-round berth heats up.
The Neville Bell-coached St George’s outfit kicked off their campaign with three consecutive wins, including a comprehensive 9-0 win over Kingston Technical, before coming up short in a 1-2 loss to Innswood.
The North Street-based team did, however, turn the tables on their St Catherine-based opponents with a 5-0 thumping, but failed to remain consistent and dropped points for a second time this season in a 1-1 score-line away to Ardenne.
The result against Ardenne has since delayed their confirmation as group winners, which would secure them a spot in the Walker Cup and the lucrative Flow Super Cup, both knockout tournaments.
And like they have done all season, the many-time champions bounced back to winning ways with a 7-0 thumping of the hapless Kingston Technical unit in their last match and will be seeking to stay true to form against today’s opponents.
The ‘Light Blues’ came out 2-0 victors in their last meeting away to the Spanish Town Road-based Denham Town, and with a lush surface at Winchester Park being conducive to their passing style of play, chances are they will be hard to deny.
STGC have so far accumulated 34 goals with the three against coming in two away fixtures, which speaks volumes to their strength at home.
However, Denham Town are currently in second place on 16 points, with a superior goal difference ahead of Innswood and will be gunning for all three points which would strengthen their chances of a second-round berth.
Ardenne High occupy fourth place on nine points, with Eltham in fifth place on six points and Kingston Technical rooted at the bottom without a point. All are now out of contention for the next round.
