CANADIAN teenager Lucas DiPasquale created a social media stir last year when he reworked tracks by dancehall artiste Popcaan. This would eventually earn the deejay’s approval and become a springboard for the budding musician’s foray into reggae.

Since then, DiPasquale has recorded with the likes of Konshens, Agent Sasco, as well as UK-based Stylo G and Kardinal Offishal. Now he is in Jamaica shooting a music video for the single No Talking, which features Popcaan.

The single is from is recently released EP — Post Secondary. “It has been so wonderful being able to work with an artiste like Popcaan,” DiPasquale told the Jamaica Observer yesterday.

“It was always something that had to be done… it had to happen, so I was just waiting for him to be available and for him to ‘dig’ one of my tracks. I sent him No Talking and he ‘dug’ it, so here we are back in Jamaica to film the video. It’s just a great experience and I really hope we can continue making music,” he continued.

DiPasquale describes Popcaan as a great artiste. “Musically, he is a great MC… he has that air about him. I see has being similar to Drake in that he can go hard with the dancehall and soften it by doing a little singing thing. This all makes him a good artiste.”

The Canadian’s interest in Jamaican music runs deep and, if he had the opportunity, current high-riding reggae act Chronixx would be next on his list. “I really love Chronixx’s music. His Dread and Terrible project was amazing, and so if I could get the opportunity to record with him it would be really, really cool.

I see myself as a singer/songwriter and I think I could learn a lot from someone like Chronixx, especially when it comes to writing. Reggae is such a different realm when it comes to writing. When you listen to Capture Land he has the ability to be so real and tell a story.”

DiPasquale said an album is in the works. But right now it’s all about the video for No Talking, which will wrap tomorrow. — Richard Johnson
