Murder toll distressing — Tivoli Commission Chairman
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Tivoli Commission Chairman Sir David Simmons has described Jamaica’s spiking murder figures as distressing.
“It’s a never-ending cycle, Jamaica has to pull back from this,” said Simmons, adding that he had seen it on the news last night that the death toll has outstripped the figures for last year.
”It really is distressing,” he added. “Distressing; distressing.”
He made the comment during the Tivoli Enquiry, during the evidence of Lieutenant Colonel Jamie O’Gilvie.
The murder toll, according to Opposition spokesman on security Derrick Smith, has now surpassed the 1005 mark for last year — the lowest in 11 years.
The police have theorised that if the killings continue at this rate, the country could end the year with more than 1,200 murders.
