KSAC to host civic and community awards
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Kingston and St Andrew Corporation (KSAC) has announced a November 2 deadline for nominations for its inaugural civic and community awards, which is to be held on November 27.
According to the KSAC, the awards will be made every three years and will be conferred on former mayors, councilors, staff, and “outstanding citizens who have served selflessly and who have gone above and beyond the call of duty, and who have through their individual and collective efforts caused tremendous improvements across the municipality, whether politically, economically or socially.”
In the community awards category, a youth aged between 13-19 who has made an outstanding contribution to the municipality through cultural and/or entrepreneurial efforts will be honoured.
An individual and/or business whose actions and achievements have shown outstanding environmental leadership or innovative environmental contributions that have had a direct benefit on the municipality will also be recognised.
Other community awards will be made to the following people: a male or female who has made outstanding contribution towards community organisation and development; an individual or voluntary organisation that has provided outstanding community services and empowerment to residents; an individual who has been committed to serving the elderly in his or her community.
Four of the five community awards have been named after the current and former mayors and one award will be made in honour of a prominent businessman.
The awards, which will be presented at the Spanish Court Hotel in St Andrew, are: the Angela Brown Burke Teen Honour Award, the Francis ‘Paco’ Kennedy Champion for the Environment Award, the Ralph Brown Memorial award, the Desmond McKenzie Award, and the Marie Atkins Award.
