The faster they go
Drag Challenge #4 on October 11 at Vernamfield, Clarendon, came and went as fast as its competitors could go down the quarter-mile. But not before leaving a few marks.
“We had our second highest competitor turn out ever,” Stephen Gunter, National Drag Racing Circuit (NDRC) executive member, told Auto.
One-hundred-and-fifty-four drivers showed up to contest the nine timed classes, each of which was slowly whittled down to the top two, and eventually the single victor. During the process, two records were lowered. Mandeville’s Xavia Murray broke the NDRC front-wheel drive record setting the benchmark at 10.193 seconds. Jody Jervis, out of Cayman Island, would set the rear-wheel drive 4/6/Rotary record at 9.858 seconds.
In the 16 and 15 second class, it was a visually oddity of sorts. Dawn Virgo in his Toyota Hiace beat out the miniscule Honda Logo of Kenroy Richards. Things were just as unusual in Super Street 15 as Marcelle Coomarsingh copped a better reaction time in his Suzuki Vitara to win over Damion Spence’s Toyota Levin.
The high performance vehicular staples were the consignment of the remaining categories as Markland McFarlane in his Toyota Starlet took home the Superior Parts 14 second class. Stanley Powell was another Starlet victor in Pro Street 13, ironically clipping famed Starlet tuner Noel ‘Spi’ Rhone, who switched to the Mitsubishi camp in a Lancer Evolution III. The Auto King 12 second class went to Junior McLean. In Pro Modified 11, Ian Galbraith continued to try and break the points gap in the NDRC teams championship with a win. Pro Modified 10 saw record setter Murray suffer problems to lose to Kenneth Timoll. Pro Race 9 went the way of Craig Lue while Adrian McLymont continues to dominate Pro Race 8.
