Superstakes back on the front burner
TRAINER Welsh Soutar said that although the running of the Superstakes has lost its competitiveness over the past several years, it has always been an important event on the racing calendar.
“Over the last several years the horses here are being shipped to Trinidad and Tobago. All the good horses have left the shore due to better purse money, among other things,” he said.
“It (Superstakes) had become a lacklustre race because you will have the same horses each year competing. Typewriter and Perfect Neighbour are the same horses dominating the races each year. We need some good horses to build up our bloodstock here,” Soutar commented.
However, Soutar believes that with Burger King on board, the Superstakes will be successful.
“The Superstakes has always been a significant race of interest, it always draws some attention to the sport and has always been a great day of racing. It is always full of excitement and fun as everyone wants to see who will take the crown.
“This year’s running will be a fantastic one, and with sponsors Burger King coming on board for three years, I think that it will be a very successful one,” he said.
