Marsh’s late strike steals points for Cavalier

Jeffrey Grant and Chevone Marsh shone for Cavalier SC in their 2-1 victory over Harbour View FC to move two points clear off the bottom of the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) standing, at Stadium East, Monday night.

The plucky win by Cavalier moved them three places up to ninth place with 12 points.

“This is the result we set out to achieve,” an elated head coach Rudolph Speid said.

“The plan entering the game was to score a goal: once we had done this we would have then given ourselves a very good chance to win the game. When the goal did come it was not the time to be laid back. Winning the game was uppermost in our minds and we were going to push forward for the win. We had made some changes earlier that included taking out a defensive midfielder for an attacking player. The move worked for us as we went for the win and were rewarded in added time,” Speid said.

Harbour View’s stand-in coach Donald Stewart was disappointed with the result and expressed the view that “it was heart-rending to leave the park losers, having (had) control of the game for the most part, but at a most critical point in the struggle, (the team) lapsed and gave up two goals.”

Harbour View, who frustrated Cavalier with a solid first-half display, eventually made the breakthrough with 30 minutes remaining when John-Ross Edwards booted home from close-up.

Cavalier became even more determined and five minutes later they scored from a corner as Jeffrey Grant rose above the Harbour View defence to get the ball over the goal line.

Harbour View went in search of another goal and in so doing left their goalkeeper Devon Haughton exposed at the back allowing Chevone Marsh to take advantage of the ball on the crest of the 18-yard box that caught goalkeeper Haughton in no man’s land where he could neither use his hands nor feet for fear of giving up a free-kick in a dangerous area.
