STETHS, DC turn back St Ann opponents in rural netball
MANDEVILLE, Manchester — St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) seniors produced a controlled performance under wet conditions to beat York Castle High 35-14 in second-round action from the ISSA rural area netball competition on Monday.
The Santa Cruz-based girls were off to a fast start at Manchester High, nicking six goals in quick succession, but had to modify their performance as the rain started, which caused both the court and the ball to become slippery.
STETHS led 9-4 in the first stanza, 19-7 in the second, 28-10 in the third, before netting another seven goals in the fourth.
And while this was their first win on the court, STETHS actually have maximum six points in Group Two, as they were awarded three points for their first game after Anchovy High failed to produced their ID cards.
“The performance was not bad,” said coach Tannika Johnson. “It could have been better, we wanted at least 40 goals, but given that the ball and the court were wet, we are satisfied.”
Earlier, deCarteret College (DC) made light work of another St Ann school, Aabuthnott Gallimore, following a 29-goal victory.
DC led 13-6 at the first-quarter break and 30-10 at half-time. And despite a somewhat improved second-half performance from their opponents, DC held on to post third- and fourth-quarter scores of 40 and 48.
Aabuthnott finished with 19 goals.
The win means DC also maintained their perfect start in Group One with maximum six points.
