A straight duel between Perfect Neighbour, Typewriter
A day of horse racing, as entertaining as any racing lover will experience at any comparable racing jurisdiction, will hug the spotlight at Caymanas Park today.
A programme of 13 races will be a showcase for the cream of the local breeding stock while competing in the Superstakes, the most sought after race on the local racing calendar, taking centre stage. Truly a “Super Day” of racing, as the programme has attracted some 149 horses running over varying distances: from 1,100 metres through 2,000 metres for some $14 million in purse money. The Glen Mills Caribbean Sprint Championship and the Invitational Mile are the other two prestigious races on the card.
Today’s lengthy programme is set to go to post as early as 11:00 am with the Invitational Mile scheduled at 2:00 pm; the Caribbean Sprint Championship is scheduled approximately one hour later, with the day’s highlighter and penultimate call, the Superstakes, scheduled to go to post at approximately 4:35 pm.
Separate from horses thundering down the track, another important feature on the programme that should attract much attention, even betting, is champion trainer Wayne DaCosta’s attempt to register his first hold on the prestigious Superstakes.
This eminent horseman has captured all before him including heading towards winning his 15th trainers’ championship, but the Superstakes is forever eluding him. However, like his super-charged Derby winner of two seasons ago, Perfect Neighbour lining up for conquest in the prestigious race it should not surprise that both are declared winners at the end of the race.
Perfect Neighbour will contest the 2,000 metres event against eight rivals that include last year’s winner Typewriter who will no doubt be his most potent danger. One year older than Perfect Neighbour at age six, Typewriter is a big-occasion performer and while he may lack the turn of foot he once had, when stretched out is as deadly as a rattler coming off the pace.
Trained by Spencer Chung, Typewriter has worked in the mould of a three-year-old coming into the race and it should take a smart performance to lower his colours especially with title-chasing former champion jockey Shane Ellis remaining in the saddle.
The Richard Azan conditioned Franfield is showing marked improvement and being a lover of this extended trip should not be discounted. However, even with Winston Griffiths up, he will have to wait on easier opportunities sitting at top weight with Perfect Neighbour and Typewriter.
Uncle Taf is holding his form quite well, but has had a very tough racing schedule and could fall short of the target.
Trainer DaCosta is also well represented in the other two emblematic races, but none should please him more than victory in the Superstakes today. He has a three-pronged attack with Ali Baba, Seeking My Dream and Fortuneonehundred competing in the Invitational Mile, while Poker Star and All Correct will run in the Caribbean Sprint. He looks certain to win one of these races.
