Yearling Sale breaks $100 million mark
Lot 100, a chestnut colt by Forest Danger – Sea Treaty, was bought for a record $5 million at this year’s Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA) Yearling Sale held in the official car park at Caymanas on Sunday.
The Everglades Farms Limited-offered colt was purchased by Shivam Maharaj from Trinidad and Tobago.
“My son is an owner. He took the love of horses from the family and he told me – “Mommy, I would like a horse at the Yearling Sale in Jamaica this year. I then asked him which horse would he want and he told me that he wants Lot 100 and I must not come home without him,” Maharaj told the Complete Racing Guide.
Sea Treaty, the dam of the $5 million colt, has produced two Derby winners; Technomoto in Jamaica and Triple Crown winner in Trinidad last year, Momentum. This broke the record of $4.8 million set by Lot 80, a bay colt by Adore The Gold – One Big Giggle also at this year’s sale. He was bought by trainer Anthony Nunes.
“This is a nicely bred horse and one of my clients in Trinidad asked me to buy him and that is what I did,” Nunes said. The previous record before this year’s sale was held by a chestnut colt by Performing Magic – Sea Treaty who was purchased for $4 million last year.
Lot 154, a bay colt by Silent Valor – Gem Lea drew some attention and was sold for $3.5 million.
Lot 140, a chestnut filly by Adore The Gold – My Legacy, sold for $3.3 million, while Lot 46, a grey colt by Traditional – Knightly and Lot 119, a chestnut filly by Traditional – Bunns Of Steel, were sold for $3 million each.
The overall sales tally was $113 million, an increase of $24.3 million compared to last year’s sale figure of $88.7 million.
“This is our best sale ever and the first time we had buyers from Guyana purchasing horses. We at TOBA are happy with this development as the support from our other Caribbean neighbour (Trinidad) is already strong, so to get additional buyers from the region is a credit to our industry,” said Howard Hamilton, president of TOBA said.
