Santa Cruz mayhem!
ST ELIZABETH, Jamaica – Eyewitnesses say mayhem prevailed late Wednesday evening in Santa Cruz during a confrontation between police and citizens.
People claiming to have witnessed the clash say a schoolgirl was injured, a police vehicle was damaged by stone throwers and lawmen ended up firing shots in the air to disperse a large, unruly crowd.
People reportedly ran in all directions after the gunshots were fired.
The situation apparently turned ugly following a standoff between taxi men and police.
Taxi operators who ply a southerly route from Santa Cruz through Leeds to Malvern allege that the police sought to have them move their vehicles from their accustomed parking space at the centre of Santa Cruz, without adequate notice.
More information later.
