St Jago, DeCarteret are all-Island badminton champions
St Jago High School and DeCarteret College were crowned Jamaica Badminton Association (JBA) 2015 All-Island Schools’ girls’ and boys’ champions after contrasting victories in the finals at the Constant Spring Golf Club Raquet Complex on Friday evening.
St Jago, who are also the Eastern Champions, created a mild upset, edging favourites Bishop Gibson 3-2, while DeCarteret College cruised to a 3-0 victory over Haile Selassie in a one-sided encounter.
The championship was determined by the best-of-five finals consisted of two singles and three doubles.
National player Shezelle McTyson started the party for St Jago when she whipped Bishop Gibson’s Jordene Chambers 21-1 and 21-0 in the first singles.
Iesha Gordon then made it 2-0 in favour of St Jago when she crushed Janiell Lopez from Bishop Gibson 21-1 and 21-5 in the second singles.
The pair of Talia Richardson and Karie Dawson pulled one back for Bishop Gibson when they easily brushed aside St Jago’s Abigail Willis and Suen Graham 21-7 and 21-11 in the first of three doubles to trail the match 1-2.
Bishop Gibson then made sure that the match went into the final and deciding fifth game when the pair of national player Alana Bailey and Talia Richardson got the better of Iesha Gordon and Leslie-Ann Thompson from St Jago 17-21, 24-22 and 24-22 to level the game at 2-2.
However, St Jago regrouped and found the perfect pair of Shezelle McTyson and Abigail Willis, who defeated the pair of Alana Bailey and Karie Dawson 21-19, 18-21 and 21-18 to take the championship.
Lisco Jackson, St Jago coach, said that he was proud of his team.
“We came second last year and I told the girls that this year we are going one better and they just did that and I am very pleased with their performance. They did well,” he said.
