Gaynstead, Camperdown chase netball glory
FIRST-TIME finalists Gaynstead High and Camperdown High will go in search for their first-ever title against different opponents in the final of the ISSA Urban High School Junior and Senior Leagues, respectively, this afternoon at the Leila Robinson Courts.
Gaynstead will face defending champions The Queen’s School in the Junior League final, starting at 2:00 pm, while Camperdown come up against former many-time champions St High’s High at 4:00 pm.
The Dalton Hinds-coached Gaynstead aggregation from the Swallowfield community reached today’s final by beating Camperdown 23-18 in the Juniors, while the Marvette Anderson-coached champions Queen’s knocked away Norman Manley High 36-20 in their respective semi-finals last Thursday.
Meanwhile, in the Senior League semi-finals, also played last Thursday, the Roy Pryce-coached St Hugh’s pulled off a come-from-behind 47-46 upset win over Queen’s, who have won for the past three years. The Wayne Stewart-coached Camperdown outscored St Catherine High 33-24.
However, the big clash this afternoon should be between defending champions Queen’s and the unbeaten Gaynstead in the Junior League final. Gaynstead will come into this encounter with a victory over the defending champions during the preliminary rounds.
Meanwhile, dethroned Junior League champions Queen’s will face St Catherine High in the third-place play-off game, while Camperdown and Norman Manley take on each other in the Senior League third place play-off, both at noon.
