Holmwood, Denbigh rule schoolgirl netball
CLARENDON PARK, Clarendon — Rural area champions Holmwood Technical and Denbigh High affirmed their credentials as schoolgirl netball superpowers following their exploits in the recently concluded ISSA competitions.
The south central-based duo bested their urban area counterparts Camperdown High and Gaynstead High to sweep the all-island senior and junior league titles last Friday at the Juici Patties Complex in Clarendon.
Holmwood, led by the sharp shooting Tracy-Ann Francis, topped Camperdown 43-37 to win their second successive senior crown and their ninth in the last 11 years, while Denbigh got by Gaynstead 31-24 to win their first national title in three consecutive attempts.
While neither champion team were ruthless in their execution, they were never in danger of losing the play-offs in front of a large home crowd.
In the senior game, Holmwood conceded the first three goals but once they edged ahead Camperdown had no answer for goal shooter Francis, whose height proved a distinct advantage in getting 39 of her team’s 43 goals.
Goal attack Keisha Bailey scored the other four goals for the Manchester-based school, who led at the end of each stanza: 13-8, 23-17, 33-28 and 43-37.
Denbigh were equally impressive in dismissing Gaynstead in the junior decider, with their main inspiration coming from Denay Thomas, who missed only two of her 21 attempts at goal.
However, in terms of percentage, her shooting partner Zandria Cohen was better; she shot a perfect 12 to help the Clarendon-based Denbigh post quarterly scores of 6-4, 7-4, 10-8, 8-8.
