New year, renewed hope and optimism

New year, renewed hope and optimism

?Dear Editor,

Many of us are overjoyed to see the end of 2015 as it was a year with numerous challenges. It was a devastating year in which Jamaicans have seen some of the most horrendous crimes committed in our country with a significant increase in the number of people who were gruesomely murdered.

For many families, 2015 will be remembered as one of the most traumatic years, as the loss of their loved ones left them with an overwhelming, terrifying and heart-rending memory.

Despite the many challenges and setbacks that we encountered in the past, the beginning of the calendar year grants us a chance to a fresh start and the opportunity to do things differently.

The year 2016 will undoubtedly be a period marked by reflection of the past, and it will come with its fair share of serious economic challenges; but this new year also presents us with the opportunity to relieve ourselves from the deprivations and suffering of poor leadership and bad governance.

The rising national debt, high rate of unemployment, the increase in the number of people who are living below poverty line, and the alarming crime rate that is sweeping the country have left many of us with very little hope for a bright future in this beautiful country.

Therefore, as we step in to the new year and hurtle towards the next general election to elect a new Government, I hope we will take this important opportunity and cast our votes sensibly, as the choices we make will help us realise our dreams and aspirations.

It is my greatest wish that all Jamaicans will unite and embrace 2016 with a renewed sense of hope and optimism for a prosperous Jamaica. I wish everyone a peaceful and successful year!
