Cop allegedly offers colleague cash to free murder suspect, offered bail
ST JAMES, Jamaica – Constable Kirton Green of the St James Division was on Wednesday offered bail when he appeared in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate’s Court to answer to charges of attempting to pervert the course of justice.
He was offered bail in the sum of J$1 million with up to three sureties.
Green was arrested by officers from the Major Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption Agency (MOCA) West on Tuesday, December 22, 2015 after he allegedly tried to pay a police sergeant US$700 for the release of a suspect who was arrested on murder charges.
The sergeant made a report to MOCA who carried out an operation which resulted in Green’s arrest.
A file was submitted to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions who ruled that he be charged. Charges were then reportedly laid against Green on December 30, 2015.
Green was also ordered to report to the Falmouth Police Station on Mondays, to surrender his travel documents, and a stop order placed at all ports.
He is set to reappear in court on Wednesday, February 17, 2016.
