My Kingston — January 10

What are your earliest memories of Kingston?

My first morning in Kingston, I remember looking up at the mountains from the city and being taken aback. They are spectacular.

What’s the most memorable meal that you have enjoyed in Kingston?

Definitely raw pizza from Mi Hungry. I’m not a very adventurous eater. Ital and sushi weren’t in my vocabulary until I arrived in Jamaica. Now, both cuisines are standards on my plate!

What would you do if you were mayor of Kingston for a day?

I’d establish an official city tour. Kingston is teeming with unique food, music, art, and culture. We need to package that into an easily consumed experience for visitors and locals alike.

What would be your recommendations to a first-time visitor to Kingston?

I like to think of myself as a creative, so the National Gallery of Jamaica is a must. Jamaicans by nature are a creative people; the National Gallery really brings this to life for me.

What’s your beverage of choice?

Guinness, but not the kind that is sold here in Jamaica. Draft Guinness stout; it’s an Irish thing!

Share the title of the last book you read.

On a recent trip to Japan I picked up a book called

Kaizen Express: Fundamentals for Your Lean Journey by John Shook and Toshiko Narusawa, an educational read illustrating the concept of continuous improvement in one’s work life.

What was the last bit of music you listened to that you enjoyed?

Has to be UB40! They have a unique sound which I can relate to, considering they’re European with a Jamaican vibe!

What cologne are you splashing?

I’m always torn between the classics and the new school. Right now, I’m into classic Old Spice.

Share some places in your travel black book.

I’ve a goal to visit a new city every year. 2015 was very good to me, so I’m looking forward to Los Angeles this summer, and Rio de Janeiro thereafter.

What do you consider your best and worst traits?

My best has to be my work ethic. I believe in good honest, hard work. My worst, my competitiveness; I always need to win! Combining both has been a good strategy.

What was your last major splurge?

A Christmas present for my mother back in Ireland. She loves to sew so my girlfriend Melissa and I sent her a dress mannequin.

What is your life philosophy?

Nothing grows in your comfort zone. This outlook drives my career and personal growth.

In affairs of the pocket, what is your best piece of financial advice?

Setting a budget. Knowing what’s coming in and what’s going out helps in making smarter decisions. I manage my personal finances just like a business.

What’s your idea of the perfect cross-country road trip?

I love to explore and on numerous occasions have driven out the entire coastal roadway of the island. Essential to those trips are good company, a surfboard, golf clubs and a resort destination.

Take us back to the moment you received the keys to your first set of wheels.

The first car I owned entirely myself was actually here in Jamaica. It was a two-seater 4×4, with removable doors. It attracted only a few willing passengers and once Melissa’s father had laid eyes on it, I knew it had to go. I’ve spotted it a couple of times since it’s been sold; it always makes me smile!

How have ridesharing services such as Uber changed the way we commute?

Uber is a prime example of how our digital lifestyle can cross over into day-to-day experiences. It’s safe, cost-effective, and prompt. The service could have a very positive effect on Jamaica with less traffic, and carbon emissions. What’s the set-up of your current 4×4?I overdress for every occasion; the same goes for my vehicle. I’m liking the matte black trend. I also have accompanying dark rims, windows and tonneau cover. Going forward, I’ll add mud tyres, and LED fog lamps!
