Jamaica’s ‘Strange Love’ for Indian dramas
Strange Love and It Seems Beautiful are the new Indian drama series that have been consuming the lives of majority of the country’s population.
Yes, the obsession is real. But have you ever wondered what’s so different with these two shows and similar Asian dramas that so many Jamaicans have gravitated towards them? This is my theory.
Our society has evolved a whole lot since the days of our parents. This evolution affords most, if not all, vast sexual freedom which is being portrayed in majority of the modern Hollywood films/television series. However, these dramas are different, as the characters still maintain their pure innocence and for the viewers, this is extremely addicting.
Imagine yourself watching the full 20 episodes of one show just to see the main characters at least get a small peck on the cheek from their love interest.
These plots are not frail and artificial; it is obvious that a lot of thought and work have been put into each production. The audience experiences a strong roller coaster ride of emotions, which causes us to be connected to every single episode and character. The plot is well organised and their story telling is done brilliantly. The comedy and romantic scenes are hilarious, naturalistic and relatable unlike the sexually free and wild American shows which the average Jamaica TEEN and even adults will naturally find hard to relate to. Even though the cliché ‘love triangle’ is used, the plot is structured in a way that revives the ‘old love’ theme, so it appears fresh and interesting.
My final and most important point: the culture, fashion and beauty in these shows is really strong. I mean, it makes you want to watch, just because the love interest of your favourite character is super attractive. Shallow? No, not one bit. These are facts. Also, the level of loyalty portrayed by each female actress for their male superior is rather humorous and astonishing for the modern female.
