It’s a dancing ‘ting
Many showgoers have seen the lone female in the Raver Clavers dance group — part of the supporting act for deejay/ dancer Ding Dong.
However, what they may do not know is that she is the eldest child of King of the Dancehall Beenie Man. Meet 24-year-old Deshagay Chantol Davis, who stands toe-to-toe with her male colleagues.
Popularly known as Desha, Davis describes herself as shy, but told
Splash that her love for dance is definitely innate.
“I’ve been told that from mi little mi love dance. I can remember being about three or four and just going in front of my grandmother’s mirror and just dancing. My father also has a big influence and he can dance too, and every year at my birthday party we would have a little dance-off. So it’s really inborn,” she said.
For a number of years, Davis has been in a relationship with fellow dancer Whizz Ravers, but that was not what drew her to the Ravers camp. She explained that it all went down one night at the popular Uptown Mondays at Savanna Plaza in Kingston.
“We were at Uptown Mondayz and Siva was playing. Mi jus’ start dance and dance out the whole song. I knew Ding Dong at the time, but just to say hi — we weren’t that close. And he came over to me and said it was the first time seeing a female dancer go so hard and Siva right through the song like the male dancers. From then I started hanging out with them at the dances and parties, and about a year ago he officially asked me to be part of the crew.”
Her moves have not gone unnoticed. She is a nominee for Best Female Dancer at the Youth View Awards. “When I heard I was so very, very happy. I was like, ‘What’? I could not stop jumping and screaming… I was so, so happy,” an excited Davis related.
While dance is her passion, she says if the right encouragement should come along she would definitely give a recording career some thought.
“I love dancing too much to give it up. I don’t love music the way I love dancing. But if an artiste like Rihanna should come and say come perform with me… then, you know, I am gone cause I really love and respect Rihanna.”
Davis has done a collaborations with her father — the ‘intro’ for Twinkle Star, a dance move she created.
The mother of a seven-year-old daughter, Chyanne, she understands that dancing will not be a lifetime endeavour. Davis is setting her sights on other options, including modelling and entrepreneurship; she hopes to open a vintage clothing store and hair salon.
