Health Ministry renews ZIKV warning
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Health Minister Horace Dalley today reported that 19 countries have reported infections with the Zika virus so far. They include Barbados, Guyana, Martinique, Suriname, Puerto Rico, Panama and Haiti.
He noted that 12 cases of possible infection in Jamaica have been brought to the Health Ministry so far. However, the samples that were sent for testing at the Trinidad and Tobago based CARPHA lab returned negative results for virus.
The minister was speaking at this morning Jamaica House Post-Cabinet press briefing in Kingston.
He urged people, especially pregnant women who are considered high risk, to take the necessary precautions to prevent being infected by the disease. “It is not if the Zika virus will come to Jamaica, it is when,” he emphasised.
