MOVEMENTS – Bob Marley Museum
Hey Guys! Welcome to another instalment of Movements!
My next stop was, Bob Marley Museum, and to be honest, the best parts of my trip were unable to be photographed. The experience was extremely worth it, because I sure did learn a lot, about my history and much about the great legend himself; Bob Marley.
The tour took us around the courtyard where we learned the history of the many paintings on the walls, as well as the life size statue that’s planted in the middle of the yard. Shocking but fun factor; did you know that Bob Marley was 5’6”? Just about as tall/short as I am! That was a tad shocking for me, but reinforced the Jamaican saying “mi likkle but mi tallawah”. Because, despite his height/size he had accomplished a great deal of things, as we know.
But friends, I must tell you, inside the museum was extremely amazing! No photos were allowed, so all the awesomeness I saw wasn’t able to be photographed. There was a whole bunch of stuff, we toured Bob Marley’s studio, which as you can imagine was the birth place of many hit singles. We also learned that Lauryn Hill among other big names once recorded there as well. The next amazing points were his bedroom, his kitchen. Whole two-thirds of rooms that were filled with lifetime achievements! I was awed by everything, I must say!
I learned that he sold over 900,000 copies of the legend album, his Grammy lifetime award. He was also labelled the sexiest man in the world back in dem sweet ol’ days; but if you see the photos I have seen, boy you couldn’t disagree one bit. Also, another interesting fact: in 2001, he got his own star on the Hollywood walk of fame.
Listen there were so many accomplishments, it would take the entire article to enlist so you really really need to go and experience this, first hand.
Other interesting facts that stunned me also, I learned that Bob Marley, in 1980 had the biggest concert of all time, hosting over 156,000 patrons in Milan Italy. It was said at that time, and even now, that not even the pope generates that big of an audience.
Also, some of the clothes worn by the great man were on showcase on the walls, his favourite denim Jacket, his dashiki and two of his football shorts.
Back in the yard, was Bongo Herman, who at the time was one of Bob Marley’s musicians and was quite happy to entertain us with drums and other percussion instruments while he shared some quite interesting pictures and stories, after which I got the chance to play one of his percussion instruments!
The best part of the trip, for me was, the very last lap of the tour: the video presentation. Seeing those videos, along with all the things I had learned, made me really understand how majestic Bob Marley was. At one point, the video got really emotional: seeing him performing on tour, as well as sharing his views on Jamaican politics, and on life also gave me a better understanding as why he was/ is revered by so many souls.
The experience, I must say, is one to be had, trust me!
The cost of the tour is only $500 with a valid Jamaican School ID. That’s not too much so you have absolutely no excuse to not check it out.
Please continue to keep up with me as I take you along on my many adventures. Which means… you have to stay tuned to see where my next movement will be!
