JNBS Sunshine Open League semis on today
Molynes United ‘A’, along with University of the West Indies (UWI) Pelicans, Waulgrovians ‘A’ and Mico ‘A’ are through to the semi-finals of the 2016 Netball Jamaica (NJ)/Jamaica National Building Society (JNB) Sunshine Open League competition after scoring wins in their respective quarter-final knockouts at the Leila Robinson Courts on Tuesday.
In today’s semi-finals, UWI Pelicans will face Waulgrovians ‘A’ and Molynes United ‘A” go up against Mico ‘A’. The first semis will start at 6:45 pm. The final is slated for Saturday.
Molynes ‘A’, who upset dethroned champions Mico ‘B’, will have their hands full against the fast-moving Mico ‘A’.
UWI Pelicans will also find their semi-final with Waulgrovians ‘A’ a tough assignment after their close quarter-final win over Jamalco.
The quarter-finals were closely contested, with the biggest upset being produced by the Roy Pryce-coached Molynes ‘A’.
They got the better of Mico ‘B’ 20-17.
Kera Christie scored 11 goals from 17 attempts and Shantal Slater added nine from 16 efforts for Molynes ‘A’, while Danielle Masters scored 13 goals from 17 efforts for Mico ‘B’.
Meanwhile, UWI Pelicans, coached by Conrad Parkes, outlasted last year’s beaten finalist Jamalco 25-23. Thristina Harwood scored 15 goals from 21 attempts and Rebekah Robinson 10 from 14 efforts for Pelicans, while Tracy-Ann Francis got 13 goals from 19 attempts for Jamalco.
Jamalco lost the services of captain and goal attack Marsha Murphy-Dawkins as a result of a foot injury inside the first quarter of the match.
The Annette Daley/Janet Guy-coached Mico ‘A’ defeated the Winston Nevers-coached Cablepro 28-17 in their quarter-final encounter. Taniel Roberts scored 27 goals from 38 attempts for Mico ‘A’, while Petal Smith contributed nine from 15 and Deneen Taylor scored eight from 16 for Cablepro.
Many-time Open League champions Waulgrovians ‘A’, coached by Marvette Anderson, registered the widest victory margin by beating Police ‘A’ 32-16 to reach the semi-finals. Ladonna scored 25 goals from 34 attempts for Waulgrovians ‘A’.
The Consolation ‘B’ Group semi-finals will also be played today with SPEG ‘A’ against Molynes ‘B’ and Tivoli Gardens meeting University of Technology (UTech) Knights beginning at 5:45 pm.
