Tamayo, Shirley make record-breaking impact in pool
The Walter Rogers National Age Group Swimming Championships has hit top gear with four record-breaking performances registered so far, two of which came on Friday’s third day at the National Aquatics Centre.
The five-day meet, which began on Tuesday and also serves as a qualifier for the 30th Carifta Swimming Championships, has been a record haven for Panamanian swimmer Ireyra Tamayo and young sensation Christanya Shirley, who share the records.
Tamayo clocked her first on Wednesday’s second day in the girls’ 13-14 100-metre butterfly with a fast 1:06.24 minutes lowering the 15-year-old mark of 1:09.71 minutes set in 2001 by R Paulson-Andrews. She won ahead of Karci Gibson (1:15.52) of Marlins and Sage Sinclair (1:17.74) of Y-Speedos.
The La Salle Swim Club representative returned on Friday to establish her second in the 200-metre freestyle in a fast 2:11.24 minutes to erase the previous mark of 2:17.17 minutes set by Anjuii Barrett last year. Britney Williams (2:19.39) of Swimmaz Aquatics was second with Naomi Eaton (2:23.74) of Wahoo Swim Club in third.
And she continued her form in the 100-metre backstroke where she won in a time of 1:10.93 minutes, just outside the record of 1:10.08 minutes set in 2009 by Kendese Nangle. Williams (1:13.89) and Gibson (1:16.99) took the minor spots.
Meanwhile, Shirley of Marlins Swim Club also stamped her class on Friday when she topped the eight and under girls’ 50-metre butterfly in a flashy 38.20 seconds, lowering the 13-year-old mark of 38.94 seconds set by Kendese Nangle in 2003. Mikayla Brown (48.68s) of Blue Seals and Savannah Taylor (56.55s) of Wahoo were second and third respectively.
Shirley got her second in the 200-metre individual medley (IM) where she clocked a fast 3:20.35 minutes to again lower another 13-year-old mark of 3:27.00 minutes set by Nangle in 2003. Brown (4:03.02) was second and Nia-Kai Campbell (4:28.50) of Sailfish was third.
Last year’s record-breaking, overseas-based star Sidrell Williams was also in top form, despite failing to etch his name in the record books so far.
Williams won the boys’ 15 & Over 50-metre butterfly in 26.74 seconds, just outside his own record of 26.07 seconds. He won ahead of Swimmaz Aquatics pair Kevaughn Campbell (28.46s) and Jordan Hines (28.57s).
Angara Sinclair of Y-Speedos won the girls’ equivalent in 31.53 seconds ahead of the Tornadoes pair of Annastazia Chin who clocked 31.80 seconds and Abigail Lamey 32.33 seconds.
Tornadoes Swim Club leads the standings with 902.5 points, ahead of Y-Speedos Swim Club with 686 points and Blue Seal Swim with 204.5 points. Swimmaz Aquatics Swim Club (157) and Marlins Swim Club (116) complete the top five heading into today’s final day.
