Gordon hits brace as MBU whip ‘Red Brigade’ 4-0

Montego Bay United 4 Gordon (2nd, 10th), Ottey (51st), Rodney (74th) Boys’ Town 0

A brace from Owayne Gordon propelled Montego Bay United (MBU) to a comfortable 4-0 beating of Boys’ Town to consolidate their lead atop the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) points standing yesterday.

Gordon netted in the second and 10th minutes and Allen Ottey (51st) and Ronaldo Rodney (74th) got the others, as the former champions made light work of the ‘Red Brigade’ at Barbican Complex.

With the win MBU moved up to 51 points, while Boys’ Town remain in the lower half of the 12-team standing on 30 points.

It was a frantic start to the encounter and MBU wasted no time in breaking the deadlock when Gordon fired a well-taken free kick past custodian Kirk Porter from 25 yards. The lead was quickly doubled eight minutes later when Gordon punished Porter for a goalkeeping error.

Despite soggy underfoot conditions MBU momentarily played some attractive-looking football and were predominantly the better outfit. They applied consistent pressure to the opponents’ defence and thought they had extended the lead close to the interval, but Rodney’s goal was from an offside position.

The momentum stuck with MBU on the resumption as Boys’ Town continued to look flat and offered very little in attack. The fleet-footed Ottey made a mockery of two defenders, before driving a powerfully struck right-footed shot past the helpless Porter to extend the lead close to the hour mark.

Boys’ Town, to their credit, did well to gradually slow up the run of play, but it was not enough to stop the onslaught of a rampant MBU outfit. The Paul ‘Tegat’ Davis-coached unit notched the fourth when Gordon broke away down the right channel and released a cross in space for Rodney to finish.

With the damage already done, Gordon had one last bite of the cherry to complete a treble and went agonisingly close, but his shot from Orlando McBayne’s cross came back off the left upright.

Winning coach Davis told the Jamaica Observer in a post-game interview that he was “well pleased” with his team’s display despite the quality of the surface.

His counterpart Andrew Price lamented his team’s “disappointing Performance”.
