Lord Equus, Pinelope shine for ‘Superkids’
As the native-bred three-year-old Classic season continues to unfold, the Superkids Racing Stable-owned Lord Equus and Pinelope entered the reckoning with eye-catching performances at Caymanas Park on Saturday.
Lord Equus, who was disqualified winner on last, made no mistake this time around in a maiden condition event going over 1,200 metres.
Trained by Philip Feanny and ridden by claiming apprentice Odean Edwards, Lord Equus got a good break from the number 11 draw but was held in third position behind Big Data (Aaron Chatrie) and Air Marshall (Shamaree Muir) before he slipped down into second position approaching the final bend.
Turning for home on the outside, Lord Equus responded well from the urgings of Edwards and powered home to win by one-and-a-quarter lengths over the fast-finishing Macallan, under Dane Nelson.
The good-looking colt My Way, the mount of Omar Walker, missed the break but was able to finish another oneand- a-half lengths adrift in third, while the lanky-looking Soy El Senor, with Shane Ellis, came on well for fourth place.
Bred by Argyll Farms, Lord Equus, a dark bay colt by Image Maker – Dancinwiththestars, covered the distance in a very encouraging 1:13:4 minutes behind testing splits of 22:4 and 46:4 seconds on a sloppy racing surface. “Lord Equus was programmed for this race.
He has trained very well coming into this one, and with running three good races before today (Saturday) I knew that he would win.
The plan coming into the race was to get a clean break, position him well in touch of the leaders and just let him run his race three furlongs out and that is what I did and he won,” Edwards said.
Meanwhile, Pinelope (Porto Santo – Black Thatch) easily got the job done in a maiden special weight event over 1,700 metres.
With the champion jockey Shane Ellis once again doing the riding honours for trainer Dwight Chen, Pinelope, who was racing for the second time, was off to good start and sat behind the early pace set by The Promise Land (Wesley Henry) and Piano Man (Paul Francis) for the first three furlongs of the race.
The bay filly then went down into second position behind The Promise Land approaching the half-mile before taking control of the race approaching the home bend.
Although stepping off the rails in centre track turning for home, Pinelope was kept well-balanced and inched away to score comfortably by fourand- a-half lengths.
Mr Doitbetta (Dane Nelson) came from far behind to snatch second position from The Promise Land, with Piano Man finishing in fourth position.
The winning time was 1:48:4 minutes behind splits of 24:0, 47:0, 1:13:0 and 1:41:0 minutes. “This horse is very talented… she is an amazing racehorse who is going places.
This race was pretty much easy as there wasn’t any real challenge. Pinelope is definitely one to look for in the 1,000 Guineas,” Ellis told The Complete Racing Guide.
