BVI police probe disappearance of man who jumped from boat
TORTOLA, British Virgin Islands (CMC) – The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force has launched an investigation into the disappearance of a young man at sea.
The police report that the man is feared dead after he allegedly humped from a vessel into the sea as a major operation against illegal immigrants was taking place in the neighbouring US Virgin Islands.
According to the police, the missing man was among four persons on a vessel that was spotted by the US Coast Guard.
Meanwhile, Ashemba Frett, 22, who was reportedly operating the vessel, was arrested and charged by the police based on allegations that he encouraged and induced aliens to illegally enter the United States territory.
A Haitian national and a national from the Dominican Republic were aboard the boat, but they did not possess any legal document to enter the USVI, law enforcers said.
Frett faces a maximum of five years in prison and a US$250,000 fine.
