Bailey shines at JBA Junior Class
Alana Bailey was the toast of the 2016 Jamaica Badminton Association (JBA) Junior Classic, winning the Under-19 Triple Crown at the Constant Spring Golf Club Racquet Complex on Sunday night.
Bailey, unseeded girls’ singles, defeated Iesha Gordon in an exciting three-setter, 20-22, 21-14 and 21-19. Bailey partnered with Esther Reynolds and defeated Taina Daley and Shezelle McTyson, the number two seeds, 21-12, 20-22 and 23-21 in the girls’ double. She then teamed up with Shane Wilson and whipped the pair Nicardo Reid and Iesha Gordon 21-15 and 21-10 in the mixed doubles.
Also winning three gold medals was Rihanna Rust. Rust won the Under-11 and Under-13 girls’ singles by beating Makyala Hardware 21-6 and 21-4, and Aliyah Bennett 21-3 and 21-4, respectively. She then partnered with Tijae Hinds in the Under-13 mixed doubles to defeat Keyon’dre McBean and Jade Ranger in straight sets, 21-9, 21-9.
Matthew Lee, the number one seed in the Boys’ Under-19 singles, outclassed his opponent Nicardo Reid 21-5, 21-5, to take his first title. He then paired with Shane Wilson to defeat Ashane Newland and Justin Taylor in the Under-19 boys’ doubles 21-15, 21-13 for his second gold medal.
Marc-Anthony Salmon was another double winner in the Under-17 age group. He defeated Malik Brown 19-21, 21-13 and 21-11 in the boys’ singles. He then teamed up with Rhys Reid and defeated Brown and Mikhail Williams 21-18, 14-21 and 21-14 in the boys’ doubles.
In other results, Taina Daley defeated Shezelle McTyson in the Under-17 girls’ singles 21-13, 22-20. Marlon Hines and Adam Taylor defeated number one seeds Tijae Hinds and Zane Reid 23-21, 21-11 in the Under-15 boys’ doubles. Zane Reid defeated Adam Taylor 21-12, 21-13 in the Under-15 boys’ singles and in the Uner-15 girls’ singles, Emily Reynolds defeated Nya Ramsay-Bryce 21-4, 21-10.
In the Under-13 boys’ singles, Tijae Hinds, number two seed, defeated Andre Stewart, the number one seed, 21-12, 18-21 and 21-16. In the Under-11 events, Jordan Turner defeated Toshiro Jones, the number one seed, 21-8, 21-11 in the boys’ singles. Turner then partnered with Makyala Hardware and defeated Jones and Abigail Walker 21-8, 21-9 in the mixed doubles. In the boys’ doubles, Nathan Lindo and Matthew Robinson defeated Jones and Bradley Case 21-14, 21-11.
