Vibrant start to new Parliament expected tomorrow
A passionate return to normality will mark tomorrow’s planned resumption of sittings of Parliament at Gordon House following the dramatic win by the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) in the February 25 General Election.
JLP leader and newly installed Prime Minister Andrew Holness will lead his 32-man team to Gordon House from the offices of the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union on Duke Street, while Opposition Leader Portia Simpson Miller is expected to lead her 31-man team to the Parliament building from the southern or downtown end.
Much drama is expected as crowds of supporters are expected to assemble on either side of the building leading to passionate reactions to the proceedings.
The meeting will start at 11:00 am and it is expected that the 21 senators will take the Oath of Office, followed by the 63 members of parliament residing in the House of Representatives.
The activity is expected to last just over two hours, unless there is an unexpected hitch, after which there will be an adjournment for a date to be fixed.
But, there are a few housekeeping matters that will have to be observed during the process, including the selection of the president and deputy president of the Senate, and the speaker and deputy speaker of the House of Representatives.
As already reported by the
Jamaica Observer, Pearnel Charles is slated to become the next Speaker, and it is expected that after he is sworn in he will make a statement to the House on what he considers tolerable while he is in the chair.
“I intend to make a statement on what I would like to see, and what I won’t tolerate, and I will make a request that we seek to operate along those lines,” Charles told the
Observer yesterday.
There was no news on who will be deputy speaker, nor whether Phillip Paulwell will become the leader of Opposition business after four years as the leader of the House. But, it has been confirmed that Derrick Smith, who had been leader of Opposition business since January 2012, will succeed him as leader of the House.
Tom Tavares-Finson will assume the chair as president of the Senate, but there has been no announcement as to who will be his deputy, nor who will be the leader of Government business in the Upper House.
However, it is likely that Kamina Johnson Smith will follow in the footsteps of former Leader of Government Business A J Nicholson, and assume that position in addition to her role as minister of foreign affairs and foreign trade.
Both Prime Minister Andrew Holness and Opposition Leader Portia Simpson Miller will address the Parliament during the event.
