Holness’ Women’s Day gesture a hit on social media

A gesture by Prime Minister Andrew Holness to surprise women at the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) with gifts of roses on Tuesday, International Women’s Day, has become a hit on social media.

Within 22 hours of its posting as at Tuesday afternoon the video received over 311,000 views, 7,200 shares, 1,700 comments, and more than 13,000 likes and ‘favourites’ on Facebook, in addition to 41 retweets and 71 favourites onTwitter. By yesterday, the Facebook viewership had reached over 361,000.

“It was my pleasure to surprise the ladies at the Office of the Prime Minister with a token on International Women’s Day. Please enjoy this video highlight. #IWD2016#,” the video is captioned.

Among those shown accepting their gift of red roses are Holness’ wife and Member of Parliament for St Andrew East Rural, Juliet, and permanent secretary at OPM Elaine Foster-Allen.

The video shows Holness opening the doors to a locked room with a young woman carrying the stack of red roses in tow. Upon entering the room, his wife expressed surprise to which Holness responded sarcastically, “Yeah, you are not surprised.”

However, she responded, “I am actually surprised to see you,” which was followed by a hug and a rose from PM Holness.

“This is an indication of our honour and respect for women,” Holness said as he presented each of the women with a rose.

On Facebook, several veiwers praised Holness for the gesture.

“Real general,” wrote Kerry-ann McLean.

“This is very nice. Our prime minister is a very good role model. Lots of love and respect for our women,” added Andre Cleanmedzz Rhoden.

Canaan Wilson was more dramatic. Said he: “By the time him dun wid we ‘a who name Obama again’? Scratching mi head. Man of the people, especially the ladies, dem love him bad!“

“This is the type of prime minister I like… he keeps up-to-date with his people… I just can’t get enough of him,” wrote Kacey Brown

For another fan, Ras Berry, Holness has raised the bar. “Not only was this a very good [gesture], but also ahonourable thing; hats off to you sir,” Ras Berry said.

Douglas Shaw added: “Mi seh when Hon Andrew Holness done with we, he can do no wrong. Lol. The man a pour out the charm and a use up social media to win over the love of the people. #maestro.”

For Andrea Peart-Flores, the gesture shows Holness as “a wonderful gentleman”.

“Real men don’t forget the importance of women… blessings to all the men who celebrate the ladies in their life,” Peart-Flores commented.

“Am getting to love and appreciate Jamaica’s prime minister more and more each day…. He is indeed a man with a gd [good] heart,” says Cayjam Queen.
