Wes Morgan calls for support
Jamaica’s ace defender Wes Morgan has made an impassioned plea to local fans to support the Reggae Boyz when they continue their dream of qualifying for the FIFA World Cup in Russia 2018 in a crucial game against Costa Rica at the National Stadium on Good Friday, March 25.
“I am asking the Jamaican people to come and support the Reggae Boyz and help us on our quest to try and qualify for the World Cup,” Morgan urged in a short audio clip, with the popular My Dream single by Nesbeth playing in the background.
The Reggae Boyz, under the guidance of Head Coach Winfried Schafer, have made tremendous strides over the past year with credible performances at the Copa America and the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
However, after going down 2-3 at home to Nicaragua, they had to be plucked from the jaws of early elimination, thanks to the heroics of Simon Dawkins in a last-gasped 2-0 win over their Central American opponents in Managua.
The Boyz then suffered a 0-2 defeat to Panama inside the National Stadium, but rebounded shortly after with a 1-0 over Haiti in Port-Au-Prince to occupy third position in Group B on three points from two games.
Costa Rica head the standing with maximum six points, ahead of Panama with three. Haiti are at the foot of the four-team table without a point.
Morgan, 32, who is the captain of Barclays Premier League leaders Leicester City, is expected to be a key figure in the Rudolph Austin-captained Reggae Boyz unit along with veteran midfielder Jobi McAnuff, former Harbour View standout Kemar ‘Taxi’ Lawrence, Adrian Mariappa, among others.
Standing at 6ft 1in, Morgan, who has so far made 23 appearances for the Reggae Boyz, stressed that the support of the crowd will give added motivation to the team.
“We need you guys to come to the National Stadium and make as much noise as possible to give us the drive and determination to perform and give our very best. We need you all there; the more the better,” Morgan noted.
“So come and support us. We need you guys. I look forward to seeing you guys at the game and all the very best,” he ended.
